Welcome to She Gets Literary.  What can I say? I've been wanting to start this blog for quite some time but have been putting it off for a multitude of reasons of which I won't bore you with. But alas, here we are. I've gone and bit the blogger bullet, with enthusiasm I might add! … Continue reading An introduction is in order…

Winter Willow book review - no spoilers - ⭐⭐⭐. . . Many thanks to @greatplainspub for the gifted copy in exchange for an honest review. . Winter Willow is one that certainly suits the cold weather. Wrap up in a blanket and expect to get drawn into this slow burn, gothic thriller. What I enjoyed most about this novel was the mystery that shrouded the third floor and Stone himself. And there were a few sharp turns that took this book from being a sleeper to holy crap did that just happen?! . Unfortunately for me it did take too long to get to that point. I also struggled with the rigid flow of text, eventually I came around to it and found it could be quite poetic. A solid 3 stars for me makes this a Good book. I'd recommend it to fans of Kate Morton. . . Here's the official synopsis:. During a winter season in the mid-1970s, unexpected and dramatic events shape the lives of three people living in the mansion, Winter Willow. Melanie, a young graduate student, is grieving the loss of her mother and main support system when she discovers that her PhD funding has been cancelled. Then she meets Stone, owner of Winter Willow, an old mansion in her neighbourhood, and is offered a position as his personal assistant. Moving in with him during that snowy and isolating season not only creates a strange sleepiness that makes it difficult for Melanie to concentrate on her studies, but also serves to disrupt the life and routine of Stone and his housekeeper, Celeste. When Melanie begins a relationship with a fellow grad student, she is confronted with the choice between a future with him and her life at Winter Willow. This novel explores the moment when a life can change, the pivot upon which the future depends. . . . . #bookreviews #notjustaprettybook #winterwillow #thriller #gothicthriller #canadian #canadianliterature #whatiread #winterbooks #giftedbook #flatlayfriday #flatlay #booksnleaf #booksofinstagram #bookoftheday #bookdragon #theunknownfilescandleco
Wow! So in my weakened state due to a powerful cold I had last week I definitely forgot to post the reveal of the November @callistocrate ! I did do a special silent unboxing series, but I typically like to follow that up with a good op fashioned newsfeed post. So here we are, fashionably late. . . There were some amazing goodies packed into the November box. My favourite (besides the book, duh) is the adorable, rustic tealight holder. . . Swipe to see the full reveal and tagged vendors. And if you're wanting to get in on the greatness that is Callisto Crate be sure to use my code LIT10 to get 10% off!. . . Now, I'm super excited about the novel. It's on my list to read. So now that I actually have a copy, there's nothing standing in my way! . . Here's the synopsis: In Berlin, at the time when the world changed, Hanni Kohn knows she must send her twelve-year-old daughter away to save her from the Nazi regime. She finds her way to a renowned rabbi, but it’s his daughter, Ettie, who offers hope of salvation when she creates a mystical Jewish creature, a rare and unusual golem, who is sworn to protect Lea. Once Ava is brought to life, she and Lea and Ettie become eternally entwined, their paths fated to cross, their fortunes linked. Lea and Ava travel from Paris, where Lea meets her soulmate, to a convent in western France known for its silver roses; from a school in a mountaintop village where three thousand Jews were saved. Meanwhile, Ettie is in hiding, waiting to become the fighter she’s destined to be. What does it mean to lose your mother? How much can one person sacrifice for love? In a world where evil can be found at every turn, we meet remarkable characters that take us on a stunning journey of loss and resistance, the fantastical and the mortal, in a place where all roads lead past the Angel of Death and love is never ending. . . . . . #canadian #canadiansubscriptionbox #bookbox #canadianmakers #alicehoffman #theworldthatweknew #callistocrate #bookmail #bookish #booknerd #historicalfiction #shereadsfiercely #bookstagram
When you think of winter do any books come to mind? Here's a few off the top of my head. . I actually haven't read 3 of these. Can you guess which ones? . . I'll give you a hint, I've read Winter Garden. It's actually one of my favourites pictures here. . . You might like it too! It's a little historical fiction, a lot of family drama, and some time-hopping. Here's the official synopsis:. . Meredith and Nina Whitson are as different as sisters can be. One stayed at home to raise her children and manage the family apple orchard; the other followed a dream and traveled the world to become a famous photojournalist. But when their beloved father falls ill, Meredith and Nina find themselves together again, standing alongside their cold, disapproving mother, Anya, who even now, offers no comfort to her daughters. As children, the only connection between them was the Russian fairy tale Anya sometimes told the girls at night. On his deathbed, their father extracts a promise from the women in his life: the fairy tale will be told one last time—and all the way to the end. Thus begins an unexpected journey into the truth of Anya’s life in war-torn Leningrad, more than five decades ago. Alternating between the past and present, Meredith and Nina will finally hear the singular, harrowing story of their mother’s life, and what they learn is a secret so terrible and terrifying that it will shake the very foundation of their family and change who they believe they are.. . . . . . #wintergarden #kristinhannah #winterbooks #winter #coldweather #sweaterweather #bookishthoughts #wegetliterary #igbooks #igreads #booksaremyfriends #bookdragon #nos4a2 #winterpeople #dianagabaldon #outlander #outlanderseries #afewofmyfavoritethings

Have you ever participated in a book swap? It's so much fun!. . . And this girl went above and beyond ❤️ I'm so excited to dive in to all these goodies as well as devour this novel. I've heard SO many great things about it. . . Here's the synopsis: In 1985, Yale Tishman, the development director for an art gallery in Chicago, is about to pull off an amazing coup, bringing in an extraordinary collection of 1920s paintings as a gift to the gallery. Yet as his career begins to flourish, the carnage of the AIDS epidemic grows around him. One by one, his friends are dying and after his friend Nico's funeral, the virus circles closer and closer to Yale himself. Soon the only person he has left is Fiona, Nico's little sister. Thirty years later, Fiona is in Paris tracking down her estranged daughter who disappeared into a cult. While staying with an old friend, a famous photographer who documented the Chicago crisis, she finds herself finally grappling with the devastating ways AIDS affected her life and her relationship with her daughter. The two intertwining stories take us through the heartbreak of the eighties and the chaos of the modern world, as both Yale and Fiona struggle to find goodness in the midst of disaster. . . . . . #canadian #canadianbookstagram #bookishcanadians #feelingbookish #bookswap #bookfriends #bookishfriends #booksofinstagram #thegreatbelievers #sharethebooks #bookmail #christmasmagic
Two posts in one day?!? What a treat lol. . Since it's December I wanted to kick off the month with an easy photo challenge. Like, super easy, because we are all busy this month. Plus I love seeing how people decorate their trees. And so Book The Tree was born. 📚 🎄 . . It's simple: Grab a book you want to read this month, shove it in your Christmas tree, snap a pic and post it with the tag #bookthetree . Don't forget to tag your friends so we can see all the trees!! I'll be shouting them out in my story feed as well ❤️. . . . . . #booksandtrees #christmastree #booktags #bookchallenges #christmastheme #wegetliterary #booklovers #bookcommunity #bookfriends #bookdragon #nichisreadingnook #booksharks #veschwab #adarkershadeofmagic
I know it's December 1 but I forgot to post yesterday. Sooo you get this today lol . November was a pretty good reading month for me. How about you? . . Here's my wrap-up:. 1) Ask Again Yes ⭐⭐⭐⭐. 2) The Family Upstairs ⭐⭐⭐💫. 3) Empire of Wild ⭐⭐⭐⭐. 4) The Heart's Invisible Furies ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐. 5) Winter Willow ⭐⭐⭐. . . I probably would have had at least one more book in there but that John Boyne is a behemoth clocking in at 582 pages. I also enjoyed that one the most (review to come). . . . . . #monthlywrapup #wrapup #november #whatiread #ilovebooks #readeveryday #readersofig #readersgonnaread #bookishthoughts #bookish #booksbooksandmorebooks #sundayvibes #yegblog
